Unit 1: An introduction to Psycholinguistics
Main Psycholinguistic concepts
In this unit we review some concepts that we have already seen in previous subjects such as educational psychology, linguistics and applied linguistics.
Language

It is a system of communication. Language is the faculty of humans to articulate words to express ideas, emotions and desires.
Applied Linguistics

It is the application of linguistics theories and knowledge in real life.
Language teaching and translation are examples of applied linguistics.
Linguistics

Linguistics is a science that studies the language as a system and it is interested in how humans use it to communicate.
Linguistics involve other areas such as morphology, phonetics, semantics, syntax, grammar, etc.
Psychology

Psychology is the study of human behavior and mental process.
For example, the age stages are important because a child does not need the same stimulus to learn as a teenager.
Psycholinguistics

Psycholinguistics is the combination of psychology and linguistics. It studies how language is processed in the brain, including the use of it, how we can understand others and answer them, learning a new language and aphasias.
