Unit 2: First Language Acquisition
Developmental Psycholinguistics
This is the sub-branch of psycholinguistics that studies how children develop and process their first language, which usually covers the first 6 years of life.
The topics it covers are important for us as LEII students because in order to acquire a second language we must have learnt the first language before, which impacts in different ways and so we can be aware of what can cause certain problems after the acquisition stages. It also helps us to understand children's development both in general and as individuals.
An interesting fact is that there is another very similar sub-branch called developmental pscychology, but its focus is different.
During the unit...
We will analyse what stages and factors are involved in order for children (like Selena Gomez at that age in the video) to reach that level of language.
